Armagh Magistrates' Court

An Armagh woman who referred to others as “gypsies”, “inbred” and “Travellers” whilst shouting in the street in front of police must wait until next month to learn her fate.

Adjourning the 49-year-old’s case for the preparation of a presentence report, the district judge stated: “I find that these offences are aggravated by racial animosity and hostility.”

Adele Gaffney, of Callanbridge Park, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour at the city’s Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry, on Tuesday via videolink from her solicitor’s office.

Prosecution outlined that on June 27, at 2am, police were called to Callanbridge Park, Armagh, after a report of an alleged assault.

Upon arrival, officers observed this defendant on the street shouting at others calling them “gypsies”, “inbred” and “Travellers”.

District Judge Bernie Kelly stated: “I find that these offences are aggravated by racial animosity and hostility.”

The case was subsequently adjourned until April 26 for the preparation of a presentence report.
