Young mum caught with drugs told conviction sends signal ‘this is not good enough’

Four small bags of herbal cannabis and grinder found after car searched at Mall East

A young mother has been fined £150 after admitting having drugs in her possession.

The 22-year-old’s barrister commented: “This sends her a signal – this is not good enough for her and it couldn’t be good for her child.”

Nicole Simpson, of Kinallen, Co Down pleaded guilty to possession of a Class B drug at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Court heard that on January 30, last year, police spotted a Ford Fiesta on Mall East in Armagh having trouble parking.

Officers spoke to the two female occupants and noted a strong smell of cannabis.

Upon being told that a search was to be conducted the defendant stated: “There are no drugs here.”

Police found four small bags of herbal cannabis and a grinder.

Simpson was arrested and did not reply when cautioned.

Court heard that the defendant was mother to a four-year-old child.

Defence barrister Seamus Lannon stated: “This sends her a signal – this is not good enough for her and it couldn’t be good for her child.”

Simpson was ordered to pay a fine of £150, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 20 weeks.
