Post office ‘must stay in Thomas Street’

Retailers on Armagh city’s Thomas Street were given the opportunity to express their views on the potential move of its post office.

Sinn Féin councillor Seaneen White met with the retailers of Armagh Shopping Centre to take on board their views regarding the proposed relocation of the Post Office.

Councillor White explained: “Businesses owners based within Armagh Shopping Centre complex have outlined their serious concerns and fears over the detrimental effect that these proposals will have on both them and the Centre’s customers”.

“The current location for the post office is ideal. It is easy to access and has been acknowledged to be one of the most disability friendly shopping precincts in the City with the massive added benefit that customers can avail of nearby free parking facilities at St Malachy’s Church car park”.

In comparison, said Councillor White, “the proposedrelocation to Emerson’s supermarket would create significantaccess challenges due the very limited amount of parking spaces in Market Street and Scotch Street, meaning that patrons will have little choice but to use paid car parking facilities elsewhere.”

Councillor White continued: “Armagh Shopping Centrehouses many successful outlets and employs over 200 people, the relocation of this Post Office would cause serious damage to these businesses.  There has been significant investment in the Centre and its facilities and the Post Office is a key factor in the business plan and overall sustainability of the Centre. The current Post Office is excellent and customer satisfaction is extremely high. I think it would be a huge mistake to move the facility.”

A public consultation, ending on 25th April, will gather views on the proposal and Councillor White encouraged local peopleto engage in the consultation exercise.

“People can write to the Post Office Regional Manager, as I intend to, or sign a petition which has been set up within Armagh Shopping Centre.  It is vital that this service is retained in its current location, there is no rationale for moving it.”
