ARMAGH SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon has called for urgent road safety improvements on the Keady Road at Ballyards.
Speaking ahead of a meeting with senior officers from DRD Roads Service next week, he said there was hardly a week goes by when there’s not an accident there
“It’s time action was taken to improve the road at this point before we have more serious accidents or even tragic deaths,” said Councillor O’Hanlon.
“Over recent years we have seen much needed and very welcome improvements made on the Keady Road, including the realignment works at Bachelors Walk and at the Dundrum Road/Tassagh Viaduct junction.
“We have seen too many lives lost along the Keady Road over the years and, whilst the improvements made to date are welcome, serious improvements are needed at Ballyards.
“Local residents are living in fear of the next knock at the door. Many tell me they dread to hear of an accident at this location and their first reaction is to ask if anyone has been badly hurt and yet they are afraid to hear the answer.
“I have been contacted by a number of residents and people who travel the road seeking urgent action and I have arranged to meet with senior officers from DRD Roads Service in the coming days.
“During our meeting I will be asking officials to investigate what options are available to them and to bring forward a scheme as soon as possible.
“This is a very busy stretch of road and it’s time action was taken to make the road much safer for all who use and live along the route.”
