Banbridge – described by one local councillor as “the business jewel of this borough” – is to be put forward as an entrant for a major UK-wide competition.
Let’s Celebrate Towns – held annually and organised by Visa and Nationwide – awards cash to winners which can then be put to good use through a local community initiative.
According to Alliance Councillor Joy Ferguson, the competition “recognises that communities drive stronger and more vibrant local economies and have a shared commitment for thriving high streets”.
Speaking at ABC Council’s economic development committee, she asked – and received – support to throw the name of Banbridge into the hat.
“It’s in its 4th year. It’s a nationwide showcase shining a light on many different initiatives that help build our towns stronger and more resilient for the future,” said Councillor Ferguson.
“Given the previous discussion in this chamber on the UK Town of Culture Bid and the positivity towards Banbridge as an ideal candidate, I would propose that the council submit a bid for Banbridge.”
The application process for Let’s Celebrate Towns was, she said, “minimal”, involving a written submission of up to 600 words with two “additional pieces of supporting evidence”, either a further two pages or two-minute video.
Councillor Ferguson said she had already spoken to one of ABC Council’s directors and confirmed the submission could be “completed internally at no cost”.
And she added: “Should Banbridge be selected, an options paper could be brought back to committee reflecting any second stage costs if we progress to the next stage. The prize is a £20,000 investment in a local community initiative and applications close at the end of October.”
Encouraging support, she spoke of why it was an avenue worthy of exploring.
“Banbridge is a commercial success story, with a thriving high street backed by strong community support,” said Councillor Ferguson.
“It is the business jewel of this borough and deserves to be recognised, and I would ask for members support to celebrate this economic position and submit an entry for Banbridge to this initiative.”
Alderman Paul Greenfield, flagging the amount of work involved in other such competitions, said this was “relatively smaller” and he was happy to support.
And Alderman Ian Burns agreed, adding: “I think it’s a great idea and the fact is that it doesn’t have as much hard work as some of the rest of them.”
