A Banbridge man who was stopped by police driving 91mph in a 60mph zone has had six penalty points placed on his licence.
Terry Stokes, 44, of Limewood, was charged at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday with driving with excess speed.
Court heard that the defendant was stopped by police on March 7 at around 10.04am driving a van in a 60mph zone at 91 mph.
Stokes made no reply when cautioned by officers at the roadside.
Defence counsel stated that the defendant drove a vehicle recovery van and was on his way to make a repair.
District Judge Bernie Kelly stated that in any event he was limited to 56mph when driving a van adding “it’s 50% over the speed limit”.
It was heard that Stokes had been driving for 25 years and that his last offence dated back to 2008.
Judge Kelly told the defendant his sentence would “reflect the speed at which he was going at and the fact he did not want to lose his licence”.
Stokes had six penalty points placed on his licence and was ordered to pay a fine of £500, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
