The popular Riverside Walk in Banbridge is about to get a whole lot more popular – with new lighting set to be installed.
The walk, which begins at Banbridge Leisure Centre, is a naturally scenic location.
But it has been lacking in adequate lighting which has been a cause for concern especially for those using it in the darker evenings.
Now Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has just awarded a contract for the provision of new lighting.
The successful company to tender was Braham Electrical, from Warrenpoint.
New lighting columns will be installed, together with other associated works, along the length of the Riverside Walk.
The lighting project was one of six selected by Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon in September to share in a £2.8 million greenway funding pot.
The cost of the scheme was given as £180,000, with the Department of Infrastructure to fund half of the total capital required.
Minister Mallon said at the time: “The four councils to benefit have indicated that the schemes would be ready to begin work in the 2020/21 financial year.
“However, it is important to say this is just the beginning. I want to see more greener and cleaner places across our island, where families and communities can thrive. These projects are the start of that change and we need to work together in government, in council and in our communities to deliver more change right across the North.
“I have written to each of these councils asking them to urgently submit their business cases so that funding can be secured and construction can begin at the earliest possible opportunity.
“I look forward to seeing the schemes completed and more people out enjoying their local environment, either by walking, wheeling or cycling.”
With the contract awarded work is expected to start shortly and should take between eight and 10 weeks to complete.
