Police confirmed the news as they appealed for witnesses to come forward.
It happened shortly before 6.30pm at the Gowdystown Road junction on the dual carriageway.
The man who died was the driver of a Volkswagen Passat car.
It was involved in a collision with a Volvo xc60.
A man and woman in the Volvo were taken to hospital for treatment to what were described as non life-threatening injuries.
Ambulances – including the NI Air Ambulance – attended the scene of the collision and the road was closed in both directions.
It remained closed as investigations continued but has now reopened.
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Inspector Johnston asked anyone who was travelling along the A1 and saw what happened to get in touch with local officers in Banbridge or the Collision Investigation Unit.
He is particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage.
Anyone who can help can contact the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 966 of the 31st March.
