Motorcyclist who fled police across border arrested at filling station along A1

Police have arrested a man who was riding a motorbike in a dangerous manner on the A1 outside Banbridge in the early hours of today, Tuesday, March 7.

The rider of a black motorbike, who is subject to bench warrants in the Republic, had failed to stop in the Republic of Ireland for An Garda Síochána at around 2.30am and proceeded northbound.

Police signalled for them to stop outside Newry and, again, the rider of the bike which didn’t have number plates made off at speed.

After failing to stop at another checkpoint, he made off. Officers then detained the individual at a filling station on the A1 outside Banbridge around 2.50am.

The 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a number of alleged offences including failing to stop, dangerous driving, possession of a Class A controlled drug and driving whilst unfit. He remains in custody at this time.

Sergeant Stevie Lawson said: “As enquiries continue and, as we liaise with An Garda Síochána, we’re appealing to anyone who captured dash-cam footage to call 101 and quote 69 07/03/23.”
