A Banbridge woman has celebrated her 100th birthday, marking the milestone surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Miss Muriel Mehaffey, described as “one of Banbridge’s finest”, reached her centenary in excellent health and continues to be an active and faithful member of Bannside Presbyterian Church, where she still worships each week.

Over the course of her long life, Miss Mehaffey made a significant contribution to Northern Ireland through her career in the Civil Service and is deeply respected within her community.

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart visited Miss Mehaffey to pass on her congratulations.

“It was a real honour to join Miss Mehaffey and her wider family circle to celebrate this remarkable occasion,” said Ms Lockhart. “What an amazing lady she is, and what a joy to spend time in her company as such special memories were made.

“Miss Mehaffey has given so much to our community and to Northern Ireland through her years of dedicated service in the Civil Service, and her commitment to her church has been a shining example of faithfulness. She is deeply respected and admired by all who know her.

“On behalf of everyone across the Upper Bann constituency, I want to wish Miss Mehaffey a very big happy birthday. To mark her centenary, I was also delighted to present her with a Queen Elizabeth II brooch from the Empire Poppy Store — a small token to honour such a special milestone in a truly special life.”
