Police have released details of the 27-year-old man killed in a road traffic collision on the A1 on Wednesday night.
Karl Henry, from Warrenpoint, died after a collision involving two cars between Banbridge and Dromore.
He was the driver of a silver Ford Fusion that collided with a black Kia Ceed close to the junction of the Halfway Road around 11.30pm.
The road was closed overnight before it was re-opened shortly before 9am this morning.
Police are continuing to appeal for anyone who was travelling on the A1 last night and who witnessed the collision or anyone who observed a black Kia Ceed or Red Kia Rio travelling on the A1 to contact local officers in Lurgan or the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference 1643 23/05/18.
A 32-year-old male driver of the Kia and the 30-year-old female driver of a third car, a red Kia Rio, have been arrested on suspicion of a number of motoring offences and are currently in police custody.
Our thoughts are with Karl’s friends and family at this tragic time.
Sinn Fein MLA Conor Murphy has expressed his deep shock at Mr Heaney’s death.
“Karl Heaney was a dedicated Gael, a senior player for Newry Mitchels GFC,” he said.
“He was a young man who touched the lives of many. The local community are stunned and shocked at this news. It is a terrible tragedy and I want to pass on my condolences to his family.
“All our thoughts and prayers are with them at this devastating time.”
Ulster Unionist MLA Doug Beattie MC expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Heaney.
“I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of a young man last night following a two car road traffic collision on the A1 between Banbridge and Dromore,” said Mr Beattie.
“Another young life has been taken too soon from within our community and my thoughts are very much with the family and friends at this difficult time.
“This is an extremely busy stretch of road with over 30,000 cars using it on a daily basis and road traffic collisions are becoming a regular occurrence.
“The Department of Infrastructure has already undergone extensive work on the A1 between Springwell Loanin and Bannview Road Bridge to improve road safety and I call on the department to assess all access points with a view to improving all central reservation crossings”.
