Tributes have been paid to a former Banbridge metal work teacher who “touched so many hearts”.
John Brown ‘JB’ Martin – known to his many pupils as Mr Martin – was a valued teacher in Banbridge High School for 30 years.
On December 7, Mr Martin passed away – aged 93 – at Craigavon Area Hospital.
Those who had the fortune of learning from the great metal work master describe him as “a great teacher” who “always had a smile for everyone”.
He had a “no nonsense” attitude that led one person to say he did not “suffer fools”, but his fair-handed approach to the classroom granted him a profound respect from pupils, many of whom hailed him as “one of the best teachers” at the High School.
Sharing their condolences with Mr Martin’s family, his former workplace said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr John Martin, former teacher at Banbridge High School. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.”
A death notice described him as the dearly loved husband of the late Margaret Joan Martin, devoted father of Joanne, Stephanie and Ivan and cherished grandfather.
Mr Martin’s Funeral Service will take place in Magherally Presbyterian Church on Wednesday at 11am, with committal following in Ballyroney Presbyterian Churchyard (arriving 2pm approx).
Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent, if desired, to William Bell & Co Funeral Directors for Magherally Presbyterian Church Funds.
