A charity to help save and rehome stray dogs – which was co-founded by a Co Armagh vet – is to benefit from a new fundraising initiative by a Belfast bar.

The Dirty Onion is one of a growing number of venues in Belfast which have chosen to go ‘dog friendly’.

And, by doing so, they hope to raise money for Lucy’s Trust, which was set up by Olivia Kennedy and Rob Durston.

The sanctuary is named after Olivia’s childhood dog, which came to her as a stray and “changed my live forever”; she began her mission to help by rescuing dogs from the pound in Craigavon.

She and Rob now run the Lucy’s Trust, which was founded in 2010 and is based in County Antrim.

According to the sanctuary, the aim is to save as many dogs as possible from needless euthanasia in Northern Ireland, by providing interim care and directly rehoming them.

The sanctuary also takes elderly and chronically ill dogs and for many is the last chance.

The Dirty Onion aims to help support the work with its decision to become dog friendly.

According to the bar, a range of events will be held – including a Hot Dawg barbebecue in the summer, a Pug Quiz in October, a Doggy Picnic in the spring and another to be decided upon yet.

“We are very excited to be partnering up with Lucy’s Trust, a fantastic local dog charity that’s helped re-home over 300 stray dogs,” The Dirty Onion’s owners say. “Hopefully with our help we can rehome more. We’re also joining a number of other Belfast bars in becoming dog friendly.

“We will be running a number of doggo events throughout the year and also offering locally made dog treats, merchandise and more. Very much looking forward to working with Lucy’s Trust and seeing your dogs enjoy visiting us.”
