Bessbrook man accused of serious domestic assault set for trial

A Bessbrook man accused of a serious domestic assault is set for the Crown Court in October.

Colin Paul Mooney, of Dobsons Way, appeared in Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, via videolink from Maghaberry, facing a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 36-year-old is also accused of possessing an offensive weapon, namely an axe, on the same date – November 16, 2024.

The court heard that both offences are aggravated by reasons of domestic abuse.

While none of the facts were detailed in court the alleged offences occurred sometime overnight between Friday, November 15 and Saturday morning of November 16.

During the short preliminary enquiry hearing – the legal step to send the case to the Crown Court – Mooney confirmed his name and date of birth and that he understood the charges against him.

District Judge Eamon King agreed there was a prima facie case to answer.

Mooney’s defence counsel made no contrary submissions.

The case was adjourned until October 14 when Mooney will appear before the Crown Court in Newry for an arraignment hearing.

Mooney was remanded back into custody until that date.
