Bessbrook man fined £250 fine for trying to import batons from China

A Bessbrook man has received a £250 fine for importing three extendable batons from China.

Court heard the weapons were found in two parcels addressed to the 34-year-old’s home which were then intercepted.

Michael Gerard Drummond, of Orior Park, was convicted in his absence of importation of an offensive weapon at Newry Magistrates’ on Monday.

Prosecution outlined that on April 10, two parcels were stopped containing three extendable batons along with cloth pouches.

The parcels had come from China and were sent to the defendant’s address.

Drummond was interviewed by police with regards to the offence and made full admissions.

District Judge Eamonn King said that the case was proved in the absence of the defendant.

Drummond was ordered to pay a fine of £250, along with the offender’s levy of £15.

A destruction order was made for the three batons.
