Community ‘left in fear’ after shot fired at house in Bessbrook

A shot was fired at a door of a house in Bessbrook on Thursday morning.

Detectives in Newry are investigating the incident in Dobson’s Way in the early hours of Thursday, December 19.

It is believed at this stage that the incident occurred at around 4am.

Officers responded, and enquiries identified damage to the front door of a house consistent with a shotgun strike. There were no reports of any injuries.

Detective Sergeant James Johnston said: “This was a reckless attack carried out in a residential area. As we continue with enquiries to establish exactly what happened, a motive and who is responsible, we appeal to anyone with information that could assist us, in particular CCTV or doorbell camera footage, we would urge you to get in touch with us.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Declan Murphy has condemned those responsible for this “appalling incident”.

“Thankfully no one was injured in this gun attack but it must have been a frightening experience for those in the house and those living nearby,” he said.

“The local community have been left in fear. They are entitled to live in peace and feel safe in their homes Anyone with information about this incident should contact the police.”
