Man who undertook police at 75mph ‘thought speed limit for road was 80mph’

Bessbrook man fined £250 after admitting two offences

A man who undertook place speeding at 75mph has been handed a £250 fine.

Court heard the 38-year-old told officers he thought the speed limit for the road was 80mph.

Nerijus Karciauskas, of College Square East, Bessbrook pleaded guilty to excess speed and driving without due care or attention at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Court heard that on October 18, at around 2.30pm, police observed a Vauxhall Astra undertake them and a bus on the Gosford Road, Armagh.

Officers followed the vehicle maintaining a distance travelling at around 75mph in what is a 60mph zone.

Police stopped the vehicle and spoke to the defendant.

Karciauskas made no reply when cautioned.

During a notebook interview, the defendant admitted to careless driving and stated he believed that the speed limit on that road was 80mph.

Karciauskas was handed three penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £250, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 12 weeks.
