The current state of Bessbrook pond has been condemned with Newry, Mourne and Down Council set to intervene.
Recent littering has seen the village greenspace look more like an amenity site much to the annoyance of residents.
Sinn Féin Councillor Declan Murphy said a number of those residents have contacted him this week about the litter which has been left in the pond.
The Slieve Gullion Councillor said: “When I went to see the reported litter at the pond I was disappointed to see the quantity that had been left behind.
“I have contacted the council and they have committed to clearing the litter this week.
“I have also requested that the council ensure the litter bins on site are regularly emptied to ensure that locals will always have the facility to safely and cleanly dispose of their litter.
“Bessbrook Pond is a fantastic asset for the whole community here and it is important that we all respect this site and help to keep it clean.”
