Plans to create a fun-for-all-the-family experienced at Derrymore Woods at Bessbrook should be completed by November.
In place will be a range of trails and pathways, new signage, picnic benches, car parks and a play area for both junior play and toddler play.
The play area will use natural materials in keeping with the character of the historic demesne and the consideration of the natural environment.
The scheme at the property – which is owned by the National Trust – will provide facilities for families to enjoy the full extent of what Derrymore Woods has to offer.
And the start of work has been welcomed by local Sinn Fein Councillor Declan Murphy.
He said: “This is a ground up project where ideas on how to make this area more accessible and family friendly are coming to fruition.
“I would like to commend, ‘Friends of Derrymore’ in particular, for initiating and driving this project and for the National Trust, council officials and Councillor Roisin Mulgrew for helping to bring it to this stage.
“This is the beginning of what will be a wonderful experience for all the people in the area.”
“This is a major boost to the local community and something everyone can enjoy all year round,” added Councillor Murphy.
