A new learning support centre – aimed specifically for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder – has been approved for St Joseph’s Primary School in Bessbrook today (Thursday).
The go-ahead came from Education Minister John O’Dowd, who praised the Co Armagh school’s role in this area.
“This proposal will provide support for children on the autistic spectrum who cannot cope in a mainstream classroom situation on a full time basis,” he said.
“Instead, they will have their needs catered for in a dedicated learning support centre for Autistic Spectrum Disorder which is attached to the mainstream school.
“St Joseph’s has operated a pilot learning support centre initiative specifically for pupils with ASD since September 2013 and it has been regarded as an outstanding success.
“Establishing this class on a permanent basis will ensure a specialist, autism-specific setting is available in the Bessbrook area, enhancing the current provision. On that basis I am content to endorse this proposal.”
