Photographs are to be taken of all headstones in council owned cemeteries across the borough to aid a global family ancestry project.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is expected to give approval to the request when its environment committee meets in Armagh tomorrow (Tuesday) night.
The project is at the request of the Latter Day Church, more commonly known as the Mormons.
Earlier this month, Latter Day Church representative Brian Monroe made a formal request to Kernan Cemetery office seeking permission to conduct a photographic survey of all headstones within the council’s cemeteries.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in conjunction with Brigham Young University in Utah, provide a web-based app with GPS for headstone positioning and a website – BillionGraves.Com – which collects, organises and displays gravestones throughout the world.
Council has been told they are a non-profit organisation and no financial gain is made from the website or app;both are provided free for people to research family history.
Mr Monroe has agreed to provide a copy of all photographs taken to the council. This would enable the council, particularly within the Craigavon cemeteries section, to incorporate the images into the Clearskies cemetery software system, providing photographic detail for family members on site.
