BT have confirmed that work is to start in the greater Armagh area in September 2014 to upgrade the broadband infrastructure to Superfast Broadband.
Armagh councillor Thomas O’Hanlon explained: “Earlier this year BT secured a contract from DETI and DARD to invest over £24.5m in upgrading the Broadband infrastructure across North Ireland and over recent months, they have been planning the roll out of the works.
“I have been advised that BT have now appointed a contractor who has commenced works already and it is anticipated that works will start in the greater Armagh area in September 2014. The works will see the upgrading of the network to Superfast Broadband and indeed works will also include extending access into areas which have had no broadband at all prior to this works.
“Broadband or the lack of it is a major issue for communities, particularly in rural areas. Modern life relies on the internet for many daily tasks, be that for personal or business use and it is really frustrating for rural dwellers who have little or no access to broadband in their homes.’
“I have been constantly passing through the postcodes of people who have contacted me to BT and asked that they are included in the scheme and I am delighted that so many local areas will benefit from the scheme. I have posted the full list for the BT60, BT61 & BT62 areas on my Facebook account so people can get check if their area is included. The details are also available on thomasohanlon.com. If an area is still not listed, I would encourage people to get in contact so I can pass the details through to BT but this is very good news for local communities and local employers.”
