Joinery Lecturers at Southern Regional College’s Armagh Campus are sharing their expertise with members of the Armagh Men’s Shed as they aim to develop their own sustainable joinery workshop in the Armagh area.
Having already joined forces, the community based, non-commercial organisation open to men aged 50+ teamed up with SRC lecturers to complete a joinery workshop induction and machine health and safety course. Moving ever closer to their goal they have now signed up to an accredited course starting in September.
Gareth Mone, Joinery Lecturer at SRC said: “We are delighted to have established such great links with the Men’s Shed here in SRC. It is such a worthwhile programme and very rewarding to be a part of the journey from the beginning. Some of the pieces the men have produced already are of a very high standard and I am sure that with the help of the team at SRC they will definitely succeed in their goal of one day having a sustainable joinery workshop in the Armagh area. Myself and the team at SRC look forward to working closely with members of the Men’s Shed in the future.”
Stephen McCleary, Programme Co-ordinator for Armagh Men’s Shed said: “Armagh Men’s Shed received funding from the National Lottery as part of a five year programme entitled ‘Reaching Out – Connecting Older People’ and the course with SRC complements this whole strategy. The men will be doing an accredited joinery course which will fit in with our future plans for sustainability and they will also be able to pass on these useful skills to other members of our shed. The men are thoroughly enjoying the joinery course and it has greatly helped in giving them a different focus in life as well as the health and wellbeing benefits.”
