A concerted community campaign is underway to try and ensure adequate medical cover in Crossmaglen.
A Facebook page has been set up – Save Rathkeeland House Surgery – following the resignation of Dr Fee.
Local campaigners are also considering a public rally and are encouraging people to write to the Health Trust and voice their concerns.
According to the organisers of the campaign: “Our treatment room in the health centre has always been the first point of contact for emergencies as we are 30 minutes from our nearest hospital.
“In the past many lives have been saved using the treatment room emergency supplies while awaiting ambulance/transfer to hospital.
“At present we don’t have an emergency trolley in the treatment room to treat emergencies nor do we have a nurse most days.”
Politicians in the area have pledged their support.
Responding to a letter regarding the future of Dr Fee’s Surgery in Crossmaglen, Newry and Armagh MLA Megan Fearon said Sinn Féin would continue to work with all groups to ensure there was adequate cover for the people of south Armagh.
“We’re acutely aware of this situation and the concern it is causing in the area,” she said.
“In recent weeks we have met with both the Trust and the Board to try and address the issues arising from Dr Fee’s resignation and have received assurances from both that they are examining all options in an effort to find a solution.
“We will continue to work with the Trust and the Board and indeed all concerned groups to try and facilitate a resolution to this issue and I would encourage all people of influence to work together on this to ensure the people of Crossmaglen and the surrounding area are not left without adequate medical cover.”
