The Social Security Agency Financial Investigation Unit obtained a Confiscation Order to the value of £45,224 against Martin Connell (56) of Beech Hill, Newry at Newry Crown Court today.
On April 25 last year, the 56-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming Income Support and a Rate Rebate and he was sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for one year.
At today’s confiscation hearing, the court agreed that the loss to the Department through the defendant’s criminal activity amounted to £45,224 and the confiscation order was then granted in this amount.
The Confiscation Order must be satisfied by March 18, 2015 or the defendant will serve a 15 month prison sentence.
