The new play park on the site of Darkley Primary School is now complete.
And local SDLP Cllr Thomas O’Hanlon has welcomed the work and thanked all involved for seeing the project through.
He said: “This week was a great week for the people of Darkley, and in particular the young people of the village and its surrounding area, as the new and much needed play park was opened to the public.
“This is a fantastic facility for the community and already it is being well used by the young people of the area and indeed those attending Darkley Primary School.
‘The new play park was a long time coming and is a massive difference to the old and tired equipment which was placed at the football field.
“This new facility brings a modern and high quality play park right into the heart of the village. It has taken a long time to get to this point, and I want to thank all involved in delivering the project.
“Whilst the need for a new play facility was identified many years ago, we always had difficulties securing a site and, with the support of Sean Hart, Principal, and the Governors of Darkley Primary School, this new facility has become a reality.
“Also, without the support and vision of the committee of Darkley Phelim Brady’s GFC, this project simply wouldn’t have got off the ground.
“I also want to place on record my thanks to Paul Hanna, from Armagh City and District Council, and the team from All Play who have overseen and delivered the project.
“This is a very much welcome development in Darkley, but it cannot be the end of the investment in the village.
“Just last week the council, at the request of the local community, appointed a team of consultants to bring forward a development plan for the village.
“I have met with the team already and they intend to meet community, sporting and cultural groups in the local community as they take forward their work and will host a public meeting in the village to listen to the views of the local community.
“A time, date and venue for this meeting will be confirmed in the coming days.
‘The development of the new dual use play park in the village by Armagh City and District Council is a very much welcome investment, and is just one of a number of new play facilities opened in the last number of years, and I hope we see swift progress on other play facilities, such as that planed for Milford, in the coming weeks and months.”
