Court hears four tonnes of waste found at laundering plant

A South Armagh man has been fined £2,500 for fuel laundering offences.

Having pleaded guilty to the charges, the defendant was also given two three month suspended prison sentences.

Thomas Moley, of Culloville Road, Crossmaglen, was also ordered to pay costs of £393.60 when he came before Newry Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday).

The court was told that, on July 15 last year, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and PSNI, with the assistance of HMRC, conducted a joint inspection of premises owned by the defendant and his wife at Culloville Road.

Approximately four tonnes of fuel laundering waste was found alongside a fuel laundering plant, the majority of which was removed by HMRC.

A quantity of mixed controlled waste had also been deposited there, despite the site having no licence or authorisation to store, keep or treat waste.

Despite being directed to remove the mixed waste from their premises in accordance with legislation, the court was told the defendant failed to do so.
