In news that will no doubt come as a relief for boys and girls up and down the Borough, Santa has been granted permission to enter the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon area on Christmas Eve!
Santa’s entry was rubberstamped at the tail end of a very important, two-hour long meeting of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council last Monday night, meaning there will be no undue complications at the border when Santa arrives from Newry, Mourne and Down!
As the rest of the business of council was drawn to a close, Sinn Fein Councillor Catherine Nelson asked: “With Santa and his reindeer due to arrive next week, can you just confirm, Lord Mayor, that his office has been in touch to seek permission to enter our Borough and that the boys and girls of our Borough are all proceeding towards the nice list?”
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Sarah Duffy, happily confirmed that permission had indeed been granted and that Santa had been in touch to provide an update on his plans.
She said: “I’m pleased to report that we’ve had an update from the North Pole just this morning. Santa and his team of elves are in full swing with preparations, ensuring everything is on track for Christmas.
“They ensure members that the reindeer are in top form after their training runs and the sleigh has passed its annual safety inspection with flying colours.”
However, part of Santa’s report was less positive as he revealed that a number of councillors are on the naughty list!
The Lord Mayor continued: “Santa did however mention that he’s keeping a close eye on the naughty and nice lists and I’ve been told that a few councillors have a bit of work to do to ensure that they make it off the naughty list in time…
“Rest assured, our Borough is ready to welcome Santa and spread the festive cheer. Let’s all stay on our best behaviour as we count down to the big day.”
In response to Santa’s report, SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon asked if the Lord Mayor had any insight into which councillors were on the naughty list.
He added: “I would respectfully hope that I’m not on the nice list because if that’s the case we’re not doing the right job.”
The Lord Mayor replied: “There’s still time to turn it all around!”
