A General Election is to be held on July 4, it has been announced.
The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, delivered the statement outside Downing Street this afternoon (Wednesday).
It’s been nearly five years since the previous election, which was held in December 2019.
The public in Northern Ireland will elect 18 MPs – one for each constituency – to represent the same at Parliament in Westminster.
In a statement released following the announcement, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart said she has her “walking shoes on and posters at the ready”.
She will be hoping to defend her seat, which she secured in 2019 with 41% of the vote, ahead of Sinn Fein’s John O’Dowd on 24.6%.
She said: “It has been an honour to serve you as MP for the past five years, one I never thought I would have. Thank you to everyone who has supported me thus far.
“Make sure you are on the electoral roll. Don’t sit on your hands but get out and vote. I can assure you that voting Lockhart X will get you a hard working, dedicated MP who gets results.
“I am determined to continue making Upper Bann a great place to live, work and do business.”
It was previously reported that incumbent Newry & Armagh MP, Mickey Brady, would not be seeking re-election.
