Driving ban for man who abandoned car after crashing into field

A Co Antrim man who abandoned his car in a field after crashing has been banned from driving for eight months.

Mark Donaldson, 32, of Whitewell Road, Newtownabbey, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates’ on Friday charged with driving a car without MOT or insurance and failing to remain and report an accident.

The incident occurred on November 18, last year, police were called to an accident on the Upper Quilly Road, Dromore, at around 11 pm.

Police found a Citroen Picasso in a nearby field which had damaged a fence and the grass, the driver could not be located.

The licence plate led police to the defendant’s address who admitted to leaving the car there.

He explained to them that a car driving towards him had its full beam headlights on and this had dazzled him.

Police later discovered that the car was not insured and had not got a valid MOT certificate.

District Judge Bernie Kelly banned Donaldson from driving for eight months and handed him a fine of £475, along with the offender’s levy of £15
