A Moyraverty man who assaulted two police officers has been sentenced to complete an 18 month probation order.
The 53-year-old’s barrister told court: “At his age he should know better than to get involved in behaviour such as this.”
Eamon Patrick McAtamney, of Drumellan Court, appeared for sentencing on two counts of assault on police at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Prosecution outlined that on August 15, at 9.40pm, police attended an address in Craigavon in relation to a matter which was not before the court. At the property was the defendant and a number of others.
McAtamney was described as being agitated by the arrival of officers. He then became aggressive and kicked a living room door at a sergeant.
The defendant was arrested at 10.23pm and whilst being conveyed to Lurgan Custody Suite he headbutted a constable, striking him on the left side of his jaw.
Prosecution informed court that the two officers sustained no serious injuries as a result.
Defence barrister Michael Tierney stated: “At his age he should know better than to get involved in behaviour such as this. Clearly alcohol is an issue and he is seeking help for that.
“He has a substantial record but much of it is of some vintage. The last page of his record takes in some 27 years. He has kept himself out of trouble but does have a tendency to drift back in.”
Deputy District Judge John Rea stated: “Having heard about this case, I believe clearly the custody threshold has been met.
“Assault on police who are carrying out their duty is a serious offence. Had either of them suffered serious injury there is no doubt you would be going to prison.”
McAtamney was sentenced to a probation order of 18 months and was ordered to pay compensation of £100 to each of the officers.
