Man accused of assaulting his mother granted bail under ‘very strict conditions’

He was released on his own bail of £250 to a Simon Community hostel approved by police well outside the Craigavon area

A Craigavon man accused of assaulting his mother has been granted bail with “very strict conditions”.

The 23-year-old was banned from entering Craigavon, save for attending court, and was told to have no contact with his mother.

Dale Ruddell, of Ardowen, appeared charged with two counts of common assault, criminal damage and threats to kill at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he appeared via videolink from Maghaberry.

Defence barrister David McKeown made it known that he wished to make a bail application for the defendant subject to a bed being available with the Simon Community.

A constable stated: “Bail is opposed for fear of interference with witnesses. There is also a domestic history between this mother and son.

“It is also feared that he would return to the area if released on bail.”

She also informed the court that on this occasion the alleged incident had been “alcohol-fuelled” as was the case in the previous domestic history.

District Judge Bernie Kelly said: “If I grant him bail there will be very strict conditions placed on him.”

Ruddell was released on his own bail of £250 to a Simon Community hostel approved by police, well outside the Craigavon area.

Conditions included; no contact with the alleged injured party or witnesses, he is not to enter Craigavon save for attending court, an alcohol ban was imposed and he is not to be in possession of or have consumed unprescribed drugs, and must observe a curfew between 8pm and 6am.

The case was adjourned to September 6 for an update on a full file.
