A man who was clocked speeding at over 90mph in a 60mph area has been told he was lucky not to be off the road.
The district judge told the 22-year-old: “If you multiply that up, it is the equivalent of over 100mph on the motorway.”
Darryn Hughes, of Kilkeel Road in Annalong, pleaded guilty to excess speed at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Prosecution outlined that on May 25, police on patrol of the A1 detected the defendant driving an Audi A5 at 94mph in a 60mph zone.
Hughes was not offered a fixed penalty due to the speed and was told the case would be referred to the court.
District Judge Steven Keown commented: “If you multiply that up, it is the equivalent of over 100mph on the motorway.”
Defence barrister John McCann stated: “This is a young man who takes this very seriously. He is 22 and has been driving since 2014.
“He works as a lorry mechanic, which requires him to drive out to fix lorries, and also as a coach driver.”
He added: “The loss of his licence will result in the loss of his employment in both of these roles.”
District Judge Keown said: “You are due credit for you guilty plea and clear record, but you are very lucky not to be off the road today.”
Hughes was handed six penalty points and was ordered to pay a fine of £300, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 12 weeks.
