Man fined £200 after traces of cannabis found on grinder at his home

Defence said: 'He accepts he has a drug addiction problem with cannabis and heroin but he will be attending with community addictions'

Craigavon Magistrates Court

A Lurgan man has been ordered to pay a fine of £200 after a grinder found at his home was found to contain traces of cannabis.

The 45-year-old’s legal representative told court: “He accepts he has a drug addiction problem with cannabis and heroin but he will be attending with community addictions.”

Nigel Martyn Stewart, of Liscorran Court, pleaded guilty to possession of Class B at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecution outlined that on July 5, a search was conducted of the defendant’s home in Lurgan during which a small amount of cannabis was found.

When interviewed, Stewart made full admissions and claimed it was for personal use.

It was later clarified by the prosecution that the small amount of cannabis referred to traces on a grinder which had been found at the property.

Defence counsel stated: “He has a record. He is currently in custody after receiving a five month sentence on November 15 but he is due for release on January 19.”

District Judge Mark McGarrity commented: “The problem is he has a bad record for drugs which most recently has been dealt with by way of immediate custody.”

Defence counsel said: “He accepts he has a drug addiction problem with cannabis and heroin but he will be attending with community addictions in Lurgan.”

Stewart was ordered to pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 26 weeks.
