Man of 20 ‘has had the full plethora of sentences from the criminal justice system’

police prison

A man has been sentenced to four months in prison after he committed offences which led to proceedings at the Crown Court during a deferral of sentencing.

It was heard that the 20-year-old failed to turn a corner during the interim as a judge told the defendant to “wise up and grow up”.

Nathan Amor, of Bronte Park, Loughbrickland appeared for sentencing on assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of class B and common assault at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Defence barrister Conor Lunny stated: “The deferral sentence does not make pleasant reading, the interim period includes a Crown Court matter for which he served time in prison and he is currently on probation”.

He said: “For a man of 20 he has had the full plethora of sentences from the criminal justice system placed on him.

“The one thing I can say is since his release in October he has not come to police attention but he had also not engaged with any of probation’s recommendations”.

It was heard that this offence occurred on June 24, of 2017, when the defendant was just 19.

He had been in a group of youths when a fight broke out which as Mr Lunny commented: “Mr Amor finished”.

The barrister stated: “He now has a young child, I know what your worship is going to say, that he wasn’t thinking about his unborn child and pregnant girlfriend when he committed this offence”.

District Judge Bernie Kelly told the defendant: “The main purpose of a deferred sentence is to give you the chance to prove you have turned a corner.

“Usually just the police having to talk to you would be enough, but you went one further and committed offences, which had to dealt with at the Crown Court as well”.

Amor was sentenced to four months in prison for the offences.

Judge Kelly stated: “Maybe this time you will learn to wise up and grow up”.

Mr Lunny said that the defendant wished to appeal the sentence and applied for bail pending this appeal.

This was refused by judge Kelly.
