A man who hit a bar owner in the face has been ordered to complete community service after dealing with his alcohol addiction.
A district judge told the 31-year-old: “Hopefully, during this period you have realised what gets you into trouble is your drinking.”
Brian Purdy, of Bredon Park, Magheralin appeared for deferred sentencing on a common assault charge at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Court heard that on May 6 at around 10pm, the defendant was asked by the owner of Joe Mac’s bar, Portadown, to leave the premises, but he refused.
The injured party then told Purdy that he would contact police.
The defendant then punched the owner on the nose and above the right eyebrow.
It was revealed the injured party was left with a cut on the nose and bruising above his right eye.
When interviewed, Purdy said he was sorry and could not remember the incident.
Defence solicitor Richard Monteith commented: “This has clearly been a good period for Mr Purdy. He has done all that has been expected of him.
“He has kept himself in employment and has worked to battle his addictions.”
District Judge Bernie Kelly stated: “Hopefully, during this period you have realised what gets you into trouble is your drinking and the only way to prevent this is to stop.”
She sentenced Purdy to an enhanced community service order saying: “I hope this can help bolster the work he has already undergone to battle addiction.”
The order was to be made up of 12 months probation and 70 hours of community service.
