Environment Minister Edwin Poots has been asked to intervene directly in a bid to resolve an ongoing problem of algae at Craigavon Lakes.
Upper Bann MLA John O’Dowd has written to the Minister and asked him to come to Craigavon to see for himself the extent of the problem.
The issue of algae blooms has been an ongoing problem for some years and this year has been no different, with Mr Poots asked to “intervene directly to resolve this problem”.
Said Mr O’Dowd: ““In recent years during a warm spring and summer the lakes have been covered in blue algae which can be toxic to both humans and animals. The algae also make the lakes look very unsightly.
“DAERA are jointly responsible with ABC Council for managing the lakes, but have not been proactive in seeking a solution to this matter.
“DAERA are also responsible for angling licences on the lakes as well as the stocking of the lakes, when the algae blooms on the lakes fishing has to be stopped for health and safety reasons.
“I have invited the Minister to visit the lakes see for himself the extent of the problem, and the excellent amenity they are for anglers and others.”
