A woman who contacted police to tell them she had no insurance after being stopped for speeding on the A1 has been handed six penalty points.
The 45-year-old told court: “It was a complete oversight on my part. I have never had no insurance from I started driving when I was 17.”
Wendy Conn, of North Gardens, Belfast, pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without insurance and excess speed at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Court heard that on November 8, the defendant was detected by police driving a Renault Clio on the A1 Dromore at 78mph in what is a 60mph zone.
Conn was cautioned for the offence and later contacted police to inform them that she did not have insurance at the time.
The defendant, who represented herself in court, stated: “I had been out of the country when my insurance was up for renewal and when I returned there was a letter from the company saying thank-you for renewing.
“However, after I was stopped I contacted the company who informed me my insurance did not automatically renew as I paid mine in full and not by direct debit.”
She said: “This was a complete oversight on my part. I have never had no insurance from I started driving when I was 17.”
Conn was handed six penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £210, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within four weeks.
District Judge Alan White stated: “That leaves you on nine points until December of next year. You are going to have to be very careful in future.”
