A Sinn Féin MLA has praised a local business for showing her son “kindness” when he requested a single flower for his great-grandparents’ grave.
MLA Aoife Finnegan said her son – Harry – entered a Crossmaglen florists, Fleur n Bloom on his way home from school last week with just €3 in his pocket.
He may have been short on change but he was big in intention. Harry’s sole purpose for entering the shop that day was to do something kind.
When he entered the premises, he asked “how much it would be for a flower?”
The politician – who is a Crossmaglen native herself – acknowledges that most shop owners “understandably” might have said, “”There’s nothing for €3 son” and sent him on his way with a smile”.
But Fleur n Bloom’s shop owner recognised the young man’s intentions and “wrapped up one beautiful rose and other flowers” which were then handed to him in exchange for the humble €3.
Said the MLA: “Harry brought those flowers to the grave of my granny and granda.
“He’d taken it into his head to go down that day, and I think that small act — his and hers — says a lot about the kind of people they are.
“In the middle of a busy day, with a business to run, she didn’t brush him off.
“She recognised a child with a pure heart doing something kind, and she matched it with kindness’s of her own.
“I just wanted to say thank you. Because good people doing good things deserve to be seen and appreciated too.”
