Crossmaglen man (67) appears in court charged with Michael McConville murder

Newry Courthouse

A Co. Armagh pensioner appeared in court today accused of the murder of a Crossmaglen man in his 70’s.

Appearing in the dock of Banbridge Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Newry, on Thursday morning, 67-year-old Malachy Quinn was charged with the murder of Michael McConville on June 15 this year.

Giving evidence to the court a detective said she was aware of the background facts and she believed she could connect Quinn, from the Annaghmore Road in Crossmaglen, to the charge.

None of those facts were opened in court but it is understood the body of Mr McConville was found with head injuries in the bathroom of a house – also on the Annaghmare Road – on Saturday evening.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said at the time: “Police received a report of the death of a man at a residential property in the Annaghmare Road area of the town shortly after 7pm on Saturday, June 15.

“On arrival, officers located the body of a man with serious head injuries in the bathroom.

“Our enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding his death and officers remain at the scene.

“I am appealing to anyone who believes they may have information which could assist us with our investigation to contact us on 101.”

In court today, Quinn’s defence lawyer confirmed there was no application for bail and accordingly, District Judge Eamon King remanded the alleged killer into custody and adjourned the case to July 17.
