Crossmaglen residents having to endure ‘very difficult conditions’ amid ongoing sewerage concerns

Chapel View Crossmaglen

Calls have been made for urgent action from NI Water and other agencies to tackle ongoing sewerage problems affecting residents in Crossmaglen.

While some remedial work has already taken place, residents of Chapel View are still experiencing blocked manholes, sanitation difficulties and incidents of sewage impacting private property.

Sinn Féin MLA Aoife Finnegan has said residents were continuing to endure “very difficult conditions” and stressed the need for clear communication and a firm timetable for resolving the issues.

“Residents are continuing to deal with very difficult conditions, and there needs to be clear communication and action to resolve these issues,” the Newry and Armagh MLA said.

She confirmed she has requested clarification from NI Water on any outstanding works, longer-term infrastructure commitments, and the steps required to bring the situation to a conclusion.

“An on-site meeting with NI Water and the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has been requested for next week to help establish clarity and agree a way forward,” she continued.

“Chapel View residents deserve reliable services and it’s important we find a positive resolution. I will continue to work with all agencies to help bring this issue to a resolution.”

Sinn Féin councillor Martin Hearty said the situation had been a “difficult time” for those living in the area.

He added: “This has been a difficult time for residents, and it’s important that the relevant agencies work together to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”
