Plans to build new shops and apartments in centre of Crossmaglen

Development will 'tie in' with character of the Square

Two new shops are planned to bring a derelict building back to life in the centre of Crossmaglen.

And the units – at Cardinal O’Fiaich Square – is part of a mixed-use development which will include the provision of four apartments.

Armagh I understands the cost of the development will be close to £750,000 – a major investment in the south Armagh village.

The buildings will be in keeping with the surrounding area, planning officials have been told.

The proposals have been submitted, in the name of E & B Carragher, to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for consideration.

The plan is to demolish a vacant two-storey house at No 31 Cardinal O’Fiaich Square and replace it with a three-storey development.

In its place two commercial units would be built, which would create a number of jobs when occupied.

And, above the ground floor retail units would be four apartments – on the first and second floors – with all providing two-bedroom accommodation for potential tenants.

According to a design statement accompanying the proposals, there has been no previous planning applications at this location in the past 20 years.

The development, it states, would “tie in with the characteristic of the design of the current facade of Cardinal O’Fiaich Square”.

Apartments would be accessed through one-entrance off the Square, with bin area and amenity space to the rear. There would be rear access to the properties from Carlingford Street and access to the new retail units from the Square.

It states that there is parking facilities within the square and perimeter of 100 spaces and 40 on-street spaces around the Square.

The application will be advertised publicly shortly and a decision expected in the coming months.
