Police confirm investigation into racist graffiti painted at family home

Police are treating incident as a hate crime

Police have confirmed they are investigating investigating an incident where racist graffiti was sprayed on the wall at the front of a house in the Forkhill area at the weekend.

The incident, which occurred in the Tievecrom Road area, is being treated as a hate crime.

It is believed the graffiti was sprayed sometime between 8pm on Saturday, September 23 and 7.30am on Sunday.

Inspector McAdam said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area either on Saturday night or the early hours of Sunday morning and who may have witnessed anything suspicious, or if you have any information that could assist our enquiries into this distressing incident, to contact police on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 544 of 24/09/17.

“Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Hate crime, in all its forms, is totally unacceptable. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to ensure that we live in a society where diversity is respected.”

Speaking to Armagh I, councillor Mickey Larkin said: “It’s absolutely disgusting, racial slurs painted on someone’s property like that.”

“It’s to be condemned, not just by myself, but the whole community. It doesn’t reflect the thoughts or feelings of the people in this area.

“The council and other organisations have been working for many years to be inclusive of people from all races, religions and creeds, so this does not reflect the general feelings of the district or anyone in it.”

If you or someone you know is the victim of a hate crime please contact police or your local support agency. For more information visit https://www.psni.police.uk/crime/hate-crime/here-to-help/
