Cullaville man given suspended sentence and fined £7,500 for waste offences

A Cullaville man was fined £7,500 and given a suspended prison sentence at Newry Magistrates’ Court for waste offences relating to the discovery of fuel laundering waste.

On 29 May 2013, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) visited premises at Concession Rd in Cullaville, where they uncovered approximately 45 intermediate bulk containers containing fuel laundering waste.

These containers, many of which were in poor condition and leaking, were found in agricultural out buildings adjacent to a private dwelling house.

Samples of the sludge were found to contain a large percentage of diesel residue and were classified as hazardous waste.

The landowner, Hugh Carragher (52), was given a prison sentence for three months, suspended for two years, was fined £2,500 for each of the three offences to which he pleaded guilty, plus court costs of £31 and an offender’s levy of £15.
