Police in Mid Ulster had to deploy a ‘stinger’ to protect the safety of the public last night (Tuesday) after they identified a van attempting to avoid a checkpoint and a chase ensued.
Explaining the incident, a police spokesperson said: “The public have a right to expect police to act when dangerous driving puts others at risk.
“Torrent Neighbourhood Police and the District Proactive Team were carrying out rural patrols and vehicle checkpoints in the Stewartstown area when a white Citroën Berlingo appeared to avoid your officers.
“The vehicle turned from our checkpoint and made off towards Ardboe. The suspect subsequently failed to stop for police and a pursuit was authorised.
“As it made off, the vehicle was observed being driven at speed and on the wrong side of the road, close to residential developments, placing other road users and residents at risk.”
Following a dynamic risk assessment, officers with enhanced skills and training deployed a stinger and brought the vehicle to a controlled stop.
Continued the spokesperson: “Our stinger devices use hollow spikes which allow tyres to deflate gradually. These tactics are subject to dynamic risk assessment. In this case, the tactic helped bring the pursuit to a swift and controlled conclusion without serious injury.
“The suspect then left the vehicle and made off on foot into a field. He was located a short distance away and arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including; failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to comply with a preliminary breath test, driving whilst unfit and failing to provide an evidential sample.
“The suspect driver was taken to custody, where he remains at this time. He was further arrested in custody on suspicion of possession of a Class A controlled drug.
“Road safety is a priority for Mid Ulster Police. Everyday we’re doing our best to enhance it. This is another example of our teams working together to deal with risks on our roads.
“Let this serve as a cautionary message to others. Our officers have the skills, training and equipment to respond, protect the public and bring offenders before the courts, day or night.
“While much of Mid Ulster sleeps, you can rest assured knowing your officers continue working to keep the district safe.”
