Elderly couple robbed while lying in their bed

An elderly couple have been left shaken after a burglary at their home in the Newtown Road area of Newry last night, Saturday, June 7.

They were in bed at around midnight when they were disturbed by a noise in the house. Their bedroom door  was then forced open and two men entered the bedroom.

One of the men was  carrying an iron bar and the other was carrying a torch. The men demanded money  from the couple before making off with a handbag containing a sum of cash.

One  of the men is described as being approximately 25-30 year old, around 5′ 8″  tall, of slim build with fair hair cut short but not shaven. He spoke with a  local Newry accent. The second man was slightly smaller and of heavier build, with fair hair and a fair complexion.

The couple were not injured but left  shaken by their ordeal.

Detectives would appeal to anyone who witnessed  the incident or anyone with any information to contact CID at Ardmore Police  Station on the non-emergency number 101. Or if someone would prefer to provide  information without giving their details they can contact the independent  charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
