The Armagh County Board has appointed Kieran McGeeney as Paul Grimley’s replacement as Armagh GAA manager.
‘Geezer’, who captained Armagh to All-Ireland glory in 2002, had been widely tipped to replace Grimley, who stepped aside earlier this month.
The appointment is on a fixed-term of five years.
The Armagh County Board tonight rubber-stamped the move which many had expected and hoped for, as it was agreed that McGeeney would be appointed on a three year term.
A statement from the Armagh County Board read: “Bord Contae Ard Mhacha are delighted to announce the appointment of Kieran McGeeney as manager of the senior football team.
“His appointment was unanimously ratified at a county board meeting held in Armagh Athletic Grounds on Wednesday 27th August 2014.
“The County Board would like to express our best wishes to Kieran, his backroom team and to our senior team as they continue to build on their recent progress.
“The County Board hope that under Kieran McGeeney’s leadership this promising team can achieve the success yearned for by the county and its loyal supporters. McGeeney captained the Armagh team when they won the All Ireland Senior Football inter-county championship in 2002. He won six Ulster titles during his 15-year playing career and also represented and captained Ireland in the International Rules side.
And the two have worked brilliantly together and created a solid foundation for the future of local football.
Despite being relegated in April to Division 3 of the Football League, Armagh went on to reach the Ulster semi-finals before victories in the qualifiers against Tyrone, Meath and Roscommon.
Grimley made the decision to step down after two years managing Armagh when the Orchard County were narrowly beaten in the All-Ireland quarter-finals by Donegal.
McGeeney returned to the Armagh fold last October and his appointment will be widely welcomed.
