Female pedestrian in her 80s dies after collision in Keady

A woman in her 80s has died following a road traffic collision in Keady last night (Tuesday).

It is understood the pensioner was struck by a vehicle on Victoria Street in the town around 8pm.

She was rushed to hospital, but died a short time later from her injuries.

Police had closed the road between Carbry Drive and Clea Road as they carried out their investigation late last night.

Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan – who lives in the town – said: “I share the shock and deep sadness of many within our Keady community at the news of the tragic death of this lady.

“The thoughts and prayers of all are with the deceased’s family and friends as they try to come to terms with the news of her tragic death and I extend my sincerest condolences to them.”

SDLP councillor Thomas O’Hanlon, also a resident of Keady, added: “This is a tragic incident and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.

“This is a community in shock and mourning, it’s also a strong community. We will rally around all involved and will offer whatever support we can. This is a tragic incident and a sad day for the town.”

Victoria Street has since re-opened, police have confirmed.
