It’s usually one of the busiest days of the year for a fish and chip shop but this year Good Friday was a little bit different.
In Keady, Ellen’s Chip Shop decided to do something different for their loyal customers, while raising money for the NHS frontline staff in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
For the first time in almost 50 years of trading there was no fresh fish on offer – a staple of Good Friday.
Instead, the popular takeaway offered up chips and onion rings to its customers – completely free of charge.
They were offered up until they simply ran out, with donations for the NHS accepted instead.
And the people of Keady responded in kind with a grand total £1243.50 and €24.65.
Announcing the sum on social media, the chipping posted: “We at Ellen’s would like to congratulate you the people of Keady and surrounding areas for your support today.
“[The money] is already on its way to Craigavon Area Hospital Covid-19 front line workers. Such fantastic community spirit showing how much we appreciate our NHS. Lastly, but by no means least, a big thank you to my amazing staff for today. Please stay safe.”
