Ulster Unionist Newry and Armagh Assemblyman Danny Kennedy has been remembering the nine RUC Officers who were killed, 30 years ago on Saturday past, in a terrorist mortar attack on Newry Police Station.
“It was one of many barbaric atrocities perpetrated by the Provisional IRA during their mass murder campaign. It devastated families and the local community,” he said.
“As the years pass, it should not be forgotten that it was due to the courage and sacrifice of those nine men and women and all their colleagues, that we now have the freedom and relative peace of today.
“It was a cowardly crime that shocked all law-abiding people in the Newry area and indeed the whole world. It is very easy for many to criticise the police now, with the advantage of sitting in the comfort of a relatively peaceful society, with little context given to the vicious terrorist campaign being waged against society by the Provisional IRA.
“The men and women of the RUC lived and worked under the threat of death on a daily basis, but despite that they continued to try and provide a service to the whole community. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with their families.”
